What is de-escalation?

De-escalation is a set of communication and behavioural skills used to calm emotionally charged or potentially aggressive situations. It allows staff to reduce tension, prevent conflict from escalating, and guide interactions toward a safer and more constructive outcome.

When people feel overwhelmed, frustrated, frightened, or unheard, their emotions can quickly intensify. In these moments, logical reasoning often becomes secondary to emotional reaction. De-escalation techniques help staff recognise these emotional states and respond in ways that lower the emotional temperature of the interaction.

Effective de-escalation involves recognising early signs of agitation, maintaining a calm and confident presence, acknowledging the person’s emotions, and communicating in a way that helps the individual regain a sense of control.

These skills are particularly important for professionals who regularly interact with members of the public who may be under stress, experiencing crisis, or reacting to difficult circumstances.
